FYI - Premature Birth

This week we celebrated World Prematurity Day.
Premature birth has been a major health concern in Canada for years. Not only is it the cause of 75% of newborn deaths to babies born without birth defects, but it also increases the risk of intellectual disabilities, behavioural problems, vision and hearing loss, and a host of other health problems. Although we can not prevent all premature births, there are specific things you can do to reduce your risk of premature birth. Start by asking if you are in any of the following high risk groups:
* working too hard
* smoking
* chronic illness
* underweight mother
* stress
* placenta previa
* infections (such as urinary tract infections)
* high blood pressure
* fibroids

If you find yourself in any of these groups, be sure to discuss your concerns with your doctor. Also, check out the following sites for more information:
